Number of Positions: 1

College Work Study (CWS): Preferred

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties are broken into two categories: digital imaging and the creation of written descriptions for original metadata records. Students may be trained in either or both sets of duties, but please indicate the duties for which you feel most qualified in the section labeled “Relevant Experience”. You do not have to be qualified for both sets of duties to apply.

Digital imaging duties include (but are not limited to) digitizing a variety of rare and fragile materials, and converting audio & video materials. Digitizing can mean anything from photographing using a Canon 5Ds or Nikon d8100, using a sheet-fed scanner, or working to capture transparencies using specialized equipment. We will train students in our workflows and equipment, but previous experience with manual photography is favored.

Metadata creation duties include (but are not limited to) inspection of rare materials, the application of standard language for which you will receive training, and the completion of defined information fields within a spreadsheet format. Language fluency (largely English), research skills, careful data entry practices, and the ability to read cursive/handwriting are vital to this suite of responsibilities. Those familiar with world history, US history, or political science are encouraged to apply.

Though daily tasks can be repetitive, this job does require creativity-- we receive hard to capture/hard to catalog objects frequently, and students must be able to brainstorm how to best image or describe the object while drawing on their knowledge of best practices and the standards set forth in the 2016 Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative. Digital Imaging Assistants are trusted to handle rare materials with extreme care, work with professional equipment, and perform multi-step tasks under minimal supervision.

Attention to detail is an absolute must for this position. This position requires full attention, thus personal cell phones are not permitted at work areas. If you are looking for a position where you can also get homework accomplished, this is not the position for you. Candidates may be asked to provide sample work that can justify previous experiences with Adobe Creative Cloud software, Capture One, or spreadsheets. Experience with Final Cut Pro or Avid softwares are a plus. Candidates selected for interviews may be tested on their photo editing skill level and/or metadata creation ability.
