The Architecture & Fine Arts (AFA) Library is developing the Material Lab, a sustainable material sample collection and related programming. The Lab hosts student assistants, each developing an independent research project to be hosted in Scalar, and identifying relevant material samples. The Material Lab student assistant reports to the Head of the AFA Library. This is anticipated to be 5-6 hours per week for the academic year. Expectations include team meetings, independent work, and regular communication.

Under the direction of the Head of AFA Library, the Material Lab student assistant will learn about the physical properties and social contexts of materials while gaining knowledge of research methodologies within their field of study. Additionally, the student assistant will strengthen communication and networking skills through interviews and contacting manufacturers, and will participate in the library practices of sourcing information, developing collections, and planning user engagement.

Minimum qualifications include expressed interest in sustainability and the material selection process in art, architecture, and design; effective communication; and time management. Desirable qualifications include experience in conducting research, conducting interviews, or writing reports.
